Review Policy

This blog is a celebration of books of various different types and genres, reflecting my wide reading tastes, mostly, but not exclusively fiction.

This is where I talk about my own choice of books: borrowed or bought, new or old.

You will find reviews of:
  • Mainstream literary fiction
  • Classic Children's fiction
  • Fantasy
  • Thrillers
  • Historical novels, especially WW2
  • Classics
  • Young Adult
It is unlikely, but not impossible, that you will find many reviews of:
  • Vampire romance
  • Science fiction
  • Blood-and-guts horror.
  • Chick lit
There are, of course, exceptions to every rule.

Of the many non-fiction genres, I am more likely to read and review something written in narrative form, for example:
  • History
  • Biographies
  • Travel writing
My target length for book reviews is between 500 and 1000 words, and I aim to review two or three books per week. Reviews generally include a brief synopsis, discussion of characters, plot or writing style, and likes and dislikes. I look at the book as a whole and may write about negative points in an overall positive review, and vice versa. Due to the depth in which I like to analyse a book, I cannot guarantee any review being spoiler-free. Any opinions expressed in this blog are my own, unless otherwise stated.

All books reviewed are procured by the usual means: own collection, borrowed from the library or a friend, unless I say otherwise.

Though primarily a book review site, I also have written posts on TV and film.

*NEW*
Star ratings have now become Button Ratings, in honour of Coraline. Not all reviews are rated.

1 button = Awful
2 buttons = Patchy, not very good.

3 buttons = OK, quite enjoyable.

4 buttons = Good.
5 stars = Practically Perfect in Every Way.
Little buttons have taken the place of half-stars.
